Fragrance oils
Fragrance oils, or perfume oils, are formulated with a base of natural essential oils and SYNTHETIC AROMATIC SUBSTANCES. Some fragrance oils can contain over 100 different odoriferous substances. All are composed of a TOP note, a MIDDLE note and a BASE note. For a fragrance to be agreeable to the nose, an equilibrium must be achieved between these three notes. A harmonious fragrance will be composed of 15 to 25 % TOP note, 30 to 40 % MIDDLE note, and 45 to 55 % BASE note.
TOP NOTES are generally comprised of volatile essences with a fresh character. They are the ones that give the first impression of the perfume. Some top notes are lavender, bergamot, lemon, coriander, aniseed, etc. The middle notes follow the top notes.
MIDDLE NOTES are essences that give a fragrance character; they are headier and evaporate more slowly. Some middle notes are marjoram, rosewood, neroli, spices, jasmine, rose, etc. The middle notes serve as a bridge between the top notes and the base notes.
BASE NOTES are more tenacious and they serve as odour fixatives. Base notes can persist for several days. Some base notes are Cedar wood, frankincense, vanilla, myrrh, patchouli, sandalwood, etc.
FAMILIES
Fragrances are grouped into families according to their dominating odour : floral, fruity, woody, etc. There are several fragrance families and each one possesses its own unique character.
The family of FLORALS comprises flower essences such as rose, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, gardenia, tuberose, or a floral bouquet. This is the most important and valued family in perfumery.
The CITRUS family contains the fresh and vivifying notes used in eau-de-Cologne for men and women (orange, mandarin, lemon, bergamot, etc.)
The CHYPRE family contains oakmoss, patchouli, lavender, bergamot, resins, etc. Elements of the Chypre family go well with fruity or floral notes.
The FOUGÈRE (fern) family is composed of essences of lavender, oakmoss, woods, coumarin, bergamot, etc. Many masculine perfumes belong to this family.
The ORIENTAL / AMBER family is composed of warm powdery notes of vanilla and amber. These heady fragrances are for the most part feminine.
The WOODY family is mostly composed of masculine notes: cedar wood, sandalwood, pine, Vetivert, rosewood, patchouli, etc.
The LEATHER family is comprised of leather, tobacco and smoke odours, including honey and birch. Men’s eau-de-Cologne also belong to this family.
The synthetic fragrance oils listed in this section are universal grade cosmetic quality concentrated fragrances. They can be used on the skin only after they have been very well diluted in a vegetable carrier oil or lotion.
THESE ARE NOT EDIBLE; THEY ARE NOT FLAVOURS!
These fragrances are not water-soluble. They need to be solubilized before being incorporated into a water-based product. Our Tween 80 is used as an emulsifier and solubilizer. Tween 80 is a non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier. This oily compound is used to solubilize essential oils and fragrance oils to facilitate their dispersion in water-based products.

Some advice: Fragrance oils should be measured by weight, using a scale, or by volume, using measuring cups or measuring spoons. It is very important to maintain consistency when measuring and to always use the same method, otherwise results will vary from lot to lot.
To avoid undesirable chemical reactions while making soap or other products, it is recommended that a small batch test be done before larger lot manufacturing is begun. This is especially essential when working with a new fragrance.
As with essential oils, SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCE OILS should be stored in a cool, dark place, away from sunlight, light and heat. Always keep out of reach of children.

AMBER
Opens with white vetivert, orris root, cedar, cypress, and woody amber. A perfumery staple.
APPLE, GREEN

A playful and fruity combination of mango, papaya, mandarin, passion fruit and myrtle berries.
MUSK
A traditional smelling musk. Deeply masculine.
